The Branson High School Trap team has just returned from the Scholastic Clay Target Program’s National Championships at the World Shooting Complex in Sparta, IL. There they competed against over 2000 other High School and Junior High shooters from around the country in a two day event, August 4th and 5th.

The SCTP has been called the “Little League” of shooting sports and has seen phenomenal growth this year, partly due to two former SCTP competitors making the US Olympic Shooting Team and heading for Beijing.

SCTP is managed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) in partnership with USA Shooting (Olympic Team) and other governing bodies for shooting sports and is enjoying record participation in 2008 with 9,135 student competitors and 1,562 adult volunteers nationwide.

Branson High School qualified three teams for the National Championships after top three finishes by each of the Varsity, Junior Varsity and Junior High teams at both the Missouri High School Championships in April, and the State SCTP Championships in June.

The Branson Varsity Team of Austin Castro, Jeremy Bradford, Patrick Cline, Megan Orle and Dalton Lambert compiled a score of 979/1000 for a 7th place finish. This included scores of 199/200 for Castro, Orle and Lambert.

The Junior Varsity Team of Bryce Haffecke, Cory Houston, Jenna Cantrell, Jake McSpadden and Taylor Tankersley shot 956/1000 for a 5th place finish. This includes scores of 197/200 by both Haffecke and Houston.

The Branson Junior High team of Mitchell Armstrong, Daniel Bergland, Matthew Cesar, Will Cooper and Josh Ong shot their best score of the year with 813/1000 for 20th place. Not bad considering this is their first year of competition and most had not shot before joining the team in January.

In addition, team members Cole Walburn, Ian Knell and Calvin Chinn participated individually as alternates for the team.

This finishes out a very successful year for the team, where in addition to the State and National honors, many individual awards were earned by team members. Both Orle and Houston also earned points toward All American Status through individual accomplishments.

Coach Mark McSpadden is excited by the fact that none of these shooters are graduating and the prospects for next year’s team are even brighter. McSpadden states “ Who wouldn’t be excited, two teams in the top ten and when we add up our five best scores we would have had 991/1000, that would have won it all and set a new record!” McSpadden would like to thank their home club, Ozark Shooters as well as the many individuals and businesses that have supported the team and helped them get to the National Championships.
