You could hear the buzz in Branson as members of the LogHoggers Chainsaw Sculpting Club fired up their chainsaws Friday, Oct. 10, at the world’s largest Titanic Museum, as part of a three day “Titanic World Class Wood Carvers Event.”
Seven master carvers from different parts of the country came to Branson for the event. Joe Hintz, of Adams, Wis., a 20 year carver, Brent Butler, of Union City, Penn., a 14 year carver, Daniel Whited, of Lakebay, Wash., a 20 year carver, Jason Emons, of St Croix, Ind., a seven year carver, Tim and Karen Parker, of Lake of the Ozarks, and Buck Sickau, of Branson, gathered together for this first of it’s kind event in the area. The 75 minute contests, where each master carver gets to take a plain block of wood and create what ever comes to mind, were held daily and gave onlookers an upclose look as to what it takes to create a piece of art from a block of wood.
John Joslyn, Titanic Museum attraction owner said, “Kids will be especially thrilled to see these carvers transform raw blocks of wood into amazing works of art with buzzing chainsaws. Wildlife, human figures, cartoon characters, benches, chairs - whatever pops into each artist’s mind - created in just 75 minutes.”
You might be asking what does wood carving and the Titanic have in common?
To make the connection you have to understand the art of wood carving. It has been captured the imagination of people of all ages as far back as ancient times through the Middle Ages, to the Gothic and Renaissance periods and Germany’s Black Forest Carvings. In fact whimsical German pieces were especially popular when the Titanic set sail in 1912 with a contingent of German passengers and crew members aboard. This gives the Titanic staff a great reason to dedicate this event to the memory of all the Germans that were on board.
This event continues through 3 p.m. today, Oct. 12. For more information or for future events, call the Titanic at 417-334-9500.
